DeckHardware - pre-season update
As we enter the start of our Spring Season we have had a lot happening here at DeckHardware, we thought we should take some time out to update you.
Melissa along with two of her friends is starting “Sailing Chix” which will be a one hour radio show all about Sailing. Their first show will kick off this Saturday 6 October at 8am Sydney Time onRadio Northern Beaches, we would love to share it with you! http://rnb.org.au/stream/ is the live stream which can also be found on the website. The co-hosts are Nic Douglass who is a two time Taser World Champion and has just started a 470 campaign. Along with Nicky Stead who has spent a lot of time working with America’s Cup and TP52 Campaigns, in particular Team Germany and Container.
They are very excited for their first show, and the first guest – dual 470 gold medalist, Malcolm Page! The second show will include 4 time Paralympian Leisl Tesch who won Gold at the recent games adding to her previous medals in Wheel Chair Basketball. Following Liesl we have Michael Blackburn who was Tom Slingsby’s Laser coach. Michael won the Laser Bronze Medal in 2000 and has started a great website for training and coaching purposes called Cracker Sports.
The show will boost the profile of not only Melissa but DeckHardware greatly as a knowledge source when it comes to the sport of sailing.
Melissa and Phil recently spent the weekend as Volunteers at the NSW Youth Championships. Details on the 200 competitors can be found at http://www.ynswyouthchamps.org.au/ where Phil was the Course Area B Race Officer with Laser Radials, Laser 4.7’s, 420’s, Flying 11’s and 29ers. Melissa was the time keeper starting over 60 races.
Melissa will be heading down to Tasmania for three weeks over the Christmas / New Year where the Australian Youth Championships are to be held. We are currently discussing sponsorship for this regatta and Melissa will have a stall setup next to the event registration www.youthchamps.org.au which will see her very busy.
At the same time many classes have their National Championships down there including Lasers, 420’s Optimists and more. The International Cadets also have their World Championships. Plenty of reasons to head to Hobart along with the finish of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart race. As usual Phil will be the starter on the Southern line for that one.
We are currently in negotiations with the Australian Sailing Team regarding sponsorship for the next Olympic program. A big reason for choosing the youth event as our big event this year is the person organizing it is also the person who we negotiate with for the AST sponsorship. To add to Melissa’s workload she has taken on qualifying for accreditation as a Coach, Umpire/Judge and Race Officer. Phil already has his National Race Officer’s certification and is looking at increasing his knowledge as an Umpire/Judge. Melissa has already umpired several high profile events and will be doing two big ones before the year is out at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.
